Companies House ID Verification

Companies House ID Verification

11/09/2025

From 18 November 2025, Companies House is introducing new rules under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, which require identity verification for anyone setting up, managing, or filing for a UK company.

This change is part of the government’s wider efforts to prevent fraud, improve corporate transparency, and ensure the integrity of the UK business environment.

Who Needs to Verify Their ID with Companies House?

You will need to verify your ID if you are one of the following:

  • Company Directors (of limited companies or LLPs)
  • People with Significant Control (PSCs) – anyone who owns or controls more than 25% of the company

Whether you’re forming a new company or are already listed on Companies House, you must complete ID verification — and keep your details up to date.

How Will Companies House Verify My Identity?

There will be two main routes for verification:

Directly through Companies House

Via an authorised agent (like your accountant or company formation agent)

You’ll typically need a valid photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, and to complete a quick online verification process. Once verified, you won’t need to do it again unless your role or status changes.
